Art as Therapy Workshop

It feels nice to be back! After several months of personal hiatus, Beyond Art's Sake is back with a new project in partnership with Tsinelas Association and Pens of Hope.

This time, the beneficiaries of the said project is the Sawang Calero Daycare Center in Brgy. Pasil, a depressed area in Cebu City. Conducting art therapy workshop for the first time is going to be a challenge for the group. Because this time around, we are not only going to use our creative talent. We need to use art as a medium to help the kids' emotional and psychological well-being. We are still in the process of creating the program and we are yet to consult some experts in dealing with kids and how to incorporate art into therapeutic activities.

The group borrowed the concept from BINHI Creatives Arts and Crafts Workshop Inc., a group of artists from Bacolod City that "nurture potentials of the youth towards growth and excellence for a holistic human development". We would like to thank our fellow artists for allowing us to spread this method in Cebu and help more kids through art.

Art therapy is defined as "a form of expressive therapy that uses art materials, such as paints, chalk and markers. Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of the different art materials." - Wikipedia

Before conducting the said workshop, the implementors need to have a focus group discussion first. Ideas and techniques need to be shared to carry on this project properly. The proposed implementation of this project is in July. It is going to be a weekend affair for our volunteer artists and beneficiaries. Finding a group of committed artists is the top priority of Beyond Art's Sake as of this moment. We welcome artists who would like to impart their time to help develop the artistic sensibilities of the kids of Sawang Calero.

If you want to help our project, you can donate art materials directly such as crayons, watercolors, art papers, etc. Another way is to buy drawings from our local artists. The proceeds will help fund the workshop. For 75 pesos per piece, you are not only supporting our cause, you can own a work of art as well. That's a win-win situation!

Please spread the word about our project and make a difference in the community of Sawang Calero.
